While teaching home lessons during the COVID-19 lockdown, I realised that my students (ages 6, 7 and 10) did not know how to worship God; very strange! Children are wonderful worshippers if they are given the freedom to express themselves in worship. When asked, they said they didn’t go to church often and their mother who held devotions with them at home had travelled. Their dad was too busy, and also, he said he didn’t know how to teach the children the Bible (I found this out as I was about to wrap up the period of teaching the lessons).
I began my classes with prayers and made them lead the prayers once in a while. By so doing, they got better at praying. Initially, they would frown, but as time went on, they began to love it. I also taught them memory verses, and they always looked forward to it; even competing amongst themselves for the position of the faster learner. Then, Bible study began. At first, we began by picking random Scriptures and sharing on them. I gave opportunity on a few occasions for them to say what they understood before giving final comments.
Then, one of them started praying that God should change them and I believe God answered because the boy’s character changed really fast. He used to be very insulting but then became calm. I realised over time that they began to change gradually (I hope they continue that way since I am no longer with them).
In fact, a time came when one of them (the last child aged 6) prayed for the second child (aged 7), for God’s healing on her, as she always wheezed (I believe she had symptoms of asthma). He must have realized that the first time we prayed for her (when she had an intense cough), it minimised gradually till it stopped on the same day. So, he took it upon himself to pray for her continually. I pray God heals her completely.
It was easier for them to understand what I taught about the things of God because they became open to spiritual things and fell in love with those experiences.
