A Little Folly Can Outweigh Much Good

Ecclesiastes says that dead flies make perfume give off a bad smell. (Ecclesiastes 10:1)

Notice that it was perfume. Something valuable. Something pleasant. Something good. Yet a few dead flies changed everything. The fragrance was lost because of something small.

The Bible then says that a little folly outweighs wisdom and honor. (Ecclesiastes 10:1) That is a painful reality.

A person may have years of wisdom, years of honorable conduct, years of faithful service. Then one act of foolishness happens, and suddenly that becomes the thing everybody talks about.

People often forget years of good and focus on one visible failure. That may not be fair, but it happens. Scripture is warning us not to underestimate small acts of folly.

Many people think, “It’s just a little compromise.” But little compromises have large consequences.

One careless decision. One secret habit. One unchecked attitude. One moment of pride. One refusal to obey.

The issue is not whether the thing seems small. The issue is what access it creates.

God wants His people to understand that little things matter. Small openings matter. Small compromises matter. (Luke 16:10)

Do not wait until something becomes a major problem before dealing with it. Deal with it while it is still small.
