We often forget that work is part of God’s design for man.
Most people would rather rest than work. Lying down is convenient. Eating and doing nothing is convenient. Sitting around and talking is convenient. Nobody needs to convince you that labour can be stressful.
But God created man to work.
Even in a perfect world, before sin entered, God gave Adam a garden and told him to tend it.
God planted the garden, gave it to him, and gave him responsibility over it.
God gives, and then He expects you to do something with what He gives.
That is why the parable in Luke 19 is important. The master called his servants and gave them minas. Then he said, “Put this money to work until I come back” [Luke 19:13]. Notice the instruction; “Put this money to work.”
The master did not give them something simply so that they could keep it somewhere and wait for him to return. He expected them to labour with what they had received.
This helps us understand the gifts and graces God gives people. God does not give you something so that you can admire it. He gives you something to use.
The problem is that sometimes we think the Christian life should always be comfortable.
We want the gift without the responsibility. We want the provision without the work. But God expects us to push ourselves.
Six days you shall work, and on the seventh you shall rest [Exodus 20:9–10]. Work was never presented as something optional for mankind.
If He has given you a business, work it. If He has placed you in an office, work faithfully there. If He has given you a ministry assignment, labour in it. If He has given you a gift, develop and use it.
And understand this: refusing to work with what God has given you is not a harmless decision. God expects a return from what He has entrusted to you.
The question is not simply, “What did God give me?” The question is, “What did I do with what He gave me?”
