One of the foolish things pride does is make you cut off people who have gone before you and think you will survive without them.
There is a reason you learn from people who went ahead of you. They have already encountered things you have not encountered. They have made mistakes you do not have to repeat.
The church experienced this problem when it separated itself from its Jewish roots.
All the early Christians were Jews. The people who wrote the Bible, apart from Luke, were Jews. These people had been walking with the God of Israel before Jesus came.
Yet the church eventually came to a place where leaders gathered in councils and did not even include Jewish Christians. They cut them off.
Pride said, “We don’t need you.” That was a serious mistake.
Think about your car engine. Suppose your father’s car engine knocked in 1998 because he failed to check the oil. You buy your own car years later and create the exact same conditions. Then your engine knocks.
Why did it happen to you? You didn’t learn from the people who had cars before you.
You were too excited that you had a car. “I’m a car owner.” Yes, you were a car owner. But you should have asked somebody who had owned a car before you: What do I need to check? What mistakes should I avoid?
Sometimes the things that seem small are extremely costly.
You could spend less than sixty seconds checking your oil. If you don’t, you could eventually spend millions of naira replacing an engine.
That is how history works too.
You cannot afford to ignore what happened before you. You study church history because it shows you what happened when people went in certain directions.
If you want to avoid repeating mistakes, learn from people who went before you.
Don’t be so proud that you cut yourself off from the lessons of history.
