The Bible gives steps. Add to your faith virtue. To virtue knowledge. To knowledge self-control. To self-control perseverance. To perseverance godliness. To godliness brotherly kindness. Then finally love. (2 Peter 1:5–7)
Many Christians stop halfway.
Some stop at knowledge. Once they know certain things, they become puffed up. They start looking down on people. They start speaking with pride. Knowledge can do that to people. Knowledge puffs up. (1 Corinthians 8:1)
That is why after knowledge must come self-control. If not, knowledge will carry you away. A little understanding can make people very arrogant. Some people learned small things and immediately became difficult to correct.
There are even preachers who deliberately withhold knowledge because they are afraid church members will become proud. They have seen what little knowledge can do to immature people.
Once knowledge comes, self-control becomes one of the greatest necessities in your life. You must hold yourself down. Tie yourself down. Control yourself. Because knowledge can intoxicate people.
Then after self-control must come perseverance. Because after you have controlled yourself for a while, the devil will start whispering to you, “You have tried enough.” That is when many people fall.
Many servants of God did not persevere. They had knowledge. They exercised self-control for some time. Then one day they relaxed. They decided they deserved a break. That was when they entered trouble.
You must stay at it. Continue. Persevere.
Humpty Dumpty had a great fall because he was sitting where he should not have been sitting. A double-minded man is unstable in all his ways. *(James 1:8)* One careless moment can scatter years of discipline.
Then comes godliness. Then brotherly kindness. Then finally love.
Many people claiming they love are still operating in lower levels. Some only have knowledge. Some have perseverance but no godliness. Some have godliness but no brotherly kindness.
Love is the highest point because God is love. *(1 John 4:8)*
And if you do not love, the Bible says you do not know God. It did not say you are not a Christian. It says you do not know God. *(1 John 4:8)*
