Many people think growth is mainly about learning mysteries and deep teachings. But the goal of all growth is love.
God is love. (1 John 4:8)
Not just powerful. Not just knowledgeable. Not just holy. God is love.
The same Bible that says God is light and there is no darkness in Him also says God is love. Why? Because you cannot claim to know God while hating people (1 John 1:5).
The Bible says if someone does not love, that person does not know God. Notice what is missing. It is God they do not know (1 John 4:8).
People say, “I know God.” Okay. Do you love?
How can someone claim to love God whom he cannot see while hating human beings he can see? (1 John 4:20)
Eventually everybody will be examined on this matter. Did you learn love? Did you grow in love? Did you treat people correctly?
Love is beyond brotherly kindness.
Brotherly kindness may simply do nice things. Love goes deeper. Love can confront. Love can correct. Love can wound temporarily for someone’s eternal good. Love is far higher. (Proverbs 27:5–6)
That is why the staircase ends with love (2 Peter 1:5–7).
Faith is not the final destination. Knowledge is not the final destination. Self-control is not the final destination. Even godliness is not the final destination. Love is.
Some Christians are still confusing one stage for the final destination. They stop climbing too early. They reach knowledge and think they have arrived. They reach self-control and think they are mature. Meanwhile the staircase is still continuing upward.
The goal is love because God Himself is love.
