The Good Works of Love

People have preached for years that it is only what you believe that saves you, as though what you do no longer matters. But scripture keeps saying something different.

Romans 2:6 says God “will repay each person according to what they have done.” Done. Not what they claimed, not what they said they believed—what they have done.

Then Revelation 20:12 says the dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books. Jesus Himself said, “I will give to each person according to what they have done” (Revelation 22:12).

Yet many Christians keep holding on to this idea that once you believed on Jesus, nothing else matters anymore. Meanwhile Jesus is saying your works matter. Paul is saying your works matter. Peter is saying your conduct matters.

You had better find out what God wants you to do and do it.

And it is not some mysterious impossible list. Start with basic obedience. People say the Ten Commandments are cancelled, yet Jesus summarized them into two commandments. If something was cancelled, why summarize it? Why condense it?

Love God. Love your neighbor (Matthew 22:37-39).

The first four commandments teach you how to relate with God. No idols. Don’t misuse His name. Honour His Sabbath.

Then the others teach you how to relate with people. Honour your parents. Don’t steal. Don’t lie. Don’t commit adultery. Don’t bear false witness. Don’t covet. The whole law was condensed into love.

And John said if you cannot love the people you see, how can you claim to love God whom you have not seen (1 John 4:20)?

So your treatment of people matters. Compassion matters. Forgiveness matters. Helping people matters. Being truthful matters. Purity matters. Obedience matters.

These are the good works you were created in Christ Jesus to walk in.
