The Pastoral Heart Will Leave the Ninety-Nine for One Lost Person

Jesus said the good shepherd leaves the ninety-nine and goes after the one that is lost [Luke 15:4-7]. That is not just a story Jesus told. That is the heart of God.

Sometimes people wonder why a meeting suddenly changes direction. A message is going one way and then suddenly something shifts.

The preacher leaves the prepared structure and starts addressing something very specific. Sometimes it is because somewhere there is one lost sheep God is reaching for.

People do not understand this pastoral burden sometimes. You may want to teach one thing. You may have prepared another thing entirely. But the Holy Spirit keeps pulling attention toward the wounded, the confused, the young, the lost. Because God cares about sheep.

And many people do not understand what it costs for a pastor to be led that way. Someone has to lay down reputation. Someone has to be willing to look undisciplined in the eyes of organized people. Older people especially may think, “Pastor, just stay with your outline.” But the Holy Spirit does not always move according to outlines.

Sometimes He interrupts because there is a sheep somewhere in danger. The pastoral heart notices people. It notices the wounded person hiding at the back.

It notices the young believer who just entered the room and understands nothing yet. It notices the person who has been silently offended with God.

It notices the healthy sheep too and keeps feeding them so they remain strong [Acts 20:28]. And this is why promises made to God matter [Ecclesiastes 5:4-5].

If you told God years ago that you would care for His people, He will hold you to it.

Many times people think certain patterns in ministry are personality. Sometimes it is covenant. Sometimes it is vows. Sometimes it is a promise that God refuses to let someone escape from.
