I saw myself in a dark valley, and I was given a torch and a sword to go on. While moving in, I came across people like me who also had a torch and a sword, but they were either sleeping under a tree or using them for themselves—to light fires for cooking or to ward off wild animals.
Jeremiah 2:13 came to mind:
“For My people have committed two evils: They have forsaken Me, the fountain of living waters, and hewed themselves cisterns—broken cisterns that can hold no water.”
I heard:
“Watchman, watch of the night, what is remaining of the night?”
I had the impression that the Lord was about to take away people’s burdens, giftings, responsibilities, and even callings because of the way they were using their gifts.
I had the impression that the people who had their gifts but were sleeping represented two kinds of people:
-
Those who did not know they had been given gifts and graces.
-
Those who knew they had been given gifts but were not utilizing them as they ought to be. It seemed that a number of us fell into this second category, and I wondered why.
The second category represented people who had these gifts, knew they had them, but were using them for their own pleasure and gain. I had the impression of:
-
People with the gift of teaching using it for public ovation.
-
People in pastoral ministry using it like therapists or psychiatrists to gain money.
-
People who are evangelistic in nature using it to gather friends and make followers for themselves.
Then it transitioned into a vision of a watch fortress. I was on the wall watching, and I saw enemies lurking in the distance. I heard:
“Enemies of the cross.”
They were trying to enter the fortress, but they could not come in on their own. They needed someone to bring them in.
Then I saw people who had the ability to go in and out of the fortress. I had the impression that these represented ministerial callings. Behind them were others following closely. I had the impression these were people watching them and learning to become like them.
Then I saw people stationed on the wall whom I understood to be watchmen. These watchmen seemed like angels working through humans.
I saw these enemies of the cross slip underneath people’s clothing, especially the followers’, hanging around their necks and clinging to them just to gain access into the fortress.
Some of the watchmen and gatekeepers listened to the promptings of the angels and were bold enough to point these things out and remove them. Others ignored the promptings and cowardly allowed those things to pass through.
I had the impression that this represented what happens when we see brethren doing something wrong but fail to correct them. We leave them with things that may later destroy their ministry or walk with God. We were supposed to help remove those things so they could become better and remain safe.
Then I heard:
“Watchman, watch of the night, what is left of My sheep?”
I was taken up to a hill, and from there I looked down into the valley I had been in before. I had the impression that the Lord was with me on the hill.
I saw a cloud of darkness approaching, and it seemed there was very little time before it covered the entire valley. Scattered across the valley were sheep beside every person who was either sleeping or using the light for themselves.
I also saw dark creatures already moving through the valley, quietly attacking the sheep. Some were being torn apart.
These sheep needed care. They needed help. They needed guidance. But their cries did not wake the people around them or move them to help—either because they did not know they had the capacity, because they were distracted with other things, or because they were using what they had been given only for themselves.
It felt like people were becoming so occupied with activity, routine, personal survival, or even ministry itself that they no longer noticed the people around them slowly breaking down.
Again, the impression came strongly that the Lord was going to remove people from certain positions and give those responsibilities to others.
The Lord looked at me and asked:
“Watchman, watch of the night, what is left of the night?”
And I answered:
“Not much, Lord.”
The clouds were moving quickly, and it would not take long before the valley was overshadowed.
At that moment, I could feel the pain the Lord was feeling. I had the impression that there were many more frightening things coming—perhaps even worse than what I had already seen—and that more intercessors needed to stand on their watch to receive the words of the Lord.
Then the Lord asked me again:
“Watchman, watch of the night, what is left of the night?”
And I answered:
“Lord, the enemies are on the move.”
